Kitty
Orth and Judy Terlizzi have been working on designing the gardens
at the Cobb Road house.
Foundation
landscaping around the house will take place once the exterior
painting of the house has been completed. For now, they are
concentrating on the surrounding gardens. Their philosophy
or rule of thumb is to discover what is there before proceeding
with any changes. Other guidelines
include focusing on native species and to planting for
wildlife habitat.
We
are being delighted this spring with masses of Virginia bluebells.
They are now in their full glory. Nodding Red Trillium, Jack
in the pulpit, Trout lily and Toothwort are joining in the parade.
The Star magnolia, snowbells and aconite are finished with
their blooms as is the skunk cabbage. But not to despair,
the Carolina silverbells, Blueberry shrubs and mayapples are getting
ready for their show as the ferns are beginning to unfurl their
fronds. The false helebores are up and will bloom in early
summer. The fox gloves (non-native) are up and will bloom
in June.

Kitty
and Judy have added some serviceberry and blueberry shrubs to the
mix for next year as well as red
osier dogwoods which will provide year round interest with their
red branches. Almost 50 christmas fern have been planted in
the back of the house behind the fox glove/cottage garden.
The house provides us with opportunities to demonstrate different
types of gardens. There are moist shade areas, dry shade
areas, wet sun areas and dry sun areas and combinations of these. With
all we will show the wide variety of native and wildlife friendly
species that can be used in these differing habitats. If you would like to
