We rely on dedicated, motivated volunteers to gather petition signatures, research issues and, most importantly, help the Land Trust do what matters to the people of Putnam County - preserve our Open Spaces. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. They're writers, waiters, bankers, students, lawyers, parents, policemen and firemen - you name it. But the single item they have in common is their desire to ensure a better life for our future.
Current Opportunities:
Garden Maintenance at the Dorrie
O ’Brien House
Will require once a month weeding and fussing with
plants during the growing season, late March to early October.
The amount of
time will depend on the number of volunteers and could be anywhere
from one hour
to about four hours. It will not be necessary to complete all
in one day. You might choose to adopt one particular area to
work at your
convenience.
The goal is to have this group be up and running
ready for spring but perhaps some help with fall clean up would
be possible. Learn
more about native plant species and about deer deterrent practices
when you
help here.
Join a Trail Building Crew
Master trail builder Dod
Chahroudi will lead a trail building crew to work on various preserves.
Learn this skill from someone
who has vast experience or bring your own special knowledge
to this. Someone
will need
to volunteer to be the group organizer. Time required as
your schedule allows.
Help Organize and File Land Trust Records
Once the
Dorrie O ‘Brien house is ready, we will be working on
organizing and filing land trust records. This is a good
project for the winter.
This will be a project you can work on at your own pace
and as your time allows.
Grant Fulfillment
The NYS Conservation Partnership
Grant will need the help of someone to put together a book for
each of our preserves.
This book will
contain all the legal documents, maps, photos, related
newspaper/pclt newsletter
articles, correspondence, etc. Most of these materials
are gathered together for each preserve. They just
need to be organized
and
put into a binder.
To carry this one step further, each manual will
then need to be copied for storage in a separate location. Training
and time beginning
in October.
Paul Elconin from The Open Space Institute will be
working with these individuals.
Newsletter Editor
We send three newsletters out per
year. We need one or more persons to come up with theme for each
issue and to seek articles from
board members, land trust members and others
to complete the newsletter. Layout is not
required. Coordination of labels and mailing
would be appreciated but not required.
Volunteer Coordinator
Do you enjoy meeting and getting
to know people? Our land trust volunteers are a wonderful group
of very diverse and interesting people and
the lucky person who takes on this mission will get to
know
them
all. Our volunteers are sorely in need of
someone who will help
coordinate
their talents to
meet Putnam County Land Trust needs. Tasks
include phone calls and maintaining an up to date list.
Handicapped Accessible
Trail Construction
Help our wonderfully organized high school
students, Anna Eisenstein, Hanna Dillman
and Krista Gabarro
as they work to complete a
trail for individuals who are physically
challenged. These
young women
are well prepared and
your time will be well spent. Help out
once or help out many times. Anything you do will
be much appreciated!
